Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief (P1,M1)
From the client brief I can infer that the client requires me to make a front cover and double page spread for a Hertfordshire based music magazine. The client wants the magazine to spread awareness of the Hertfordshire music scene.
Idea 1
Music festivals in Hertfordshire
One idea I have for my magazine is music festivals and events in Hertfordshire. This idea could be very informative for music lovers in Hertfordshire and for people that want to go to festivals that are local to them.
I would choose multiple music festivals and events in Hertfordshire so that people could see many different options of what festivals there are to go to. I think by choosing multiple festivals it will show a range of venues and genres of music so it will appeal to a wider audience. The price of this magazine will be £4.99 and will be released monthly. The target audience for this magazine will be 16-25 years old. I have chosen this age group as this is the main age that people go to festivals. Also a lot of festivals have a minimum age of 16 so by having local festivals it means it is more accessible for the younger people going. My tertiary target audience would be 35-45 years old. This is because a lot of people this age go to festivals and enjoy going to festivals. A lot of people this age go in large groups, so having 35-45 years old as a tertiary target age group as large groups will mean a lot of ticket sales for the companies organizing the festivals. The contents of my double page spread will include information about upcoming festivals in Hertfordshire and reviews on the festivals by people who have recently been there. I will also include questions and answers by people who have recently been to the festivals.
I would call this magazine Festival insight. I have chosen this title because when first seeing the magazine, form the title they can infer it will be in insight to festivals. The main color of my magazine will be grey and blue. These two colors are quite calm which is appealing to many audiences, and doesn't just target one audience to pick up or download the magazine.
Strengths and weaknesses
The strength of doing a magazine on local music festivals is that there will be many people in the area who will want to know what festivals are coming up and where and when they are. This will attract many people in the local area to purchase this magazine as it will be very informative for readers. Another strength of this magazine is that there is many music festivals in Hertfordshire. This is very good because it means there will be lots of content for them magazine when it comes out each month. This means for the people reading there will be lots of new different next content.
A weaknesses of this idea is that festivals tend to be seasonal. This is a problem as most festivals are in the summer therefore meaning that during the other seasons there will not be as many festivals/ events to write about so there will not be as much in the magazine. Another weakness is that a lot of people that go to festivals are younger so they may not want to read a magazine about festivals when they could just find information about it on their mobile phones. Another very relevant weakness is that we are in a global pandemic, therefore not as many if not no festivals are happening. This means there will be nothing for the magazine to write about.
Idea 2
My second idea is pop music in Hertfordshire. This idea could attract many people to want to buy this magazine because pop is one of the in not the most popular music genre. By choosing this genre it could be very successful due to its popularity.
In the magazine I would speak about general pop music in Hertfordshire in the magazine, but I would also talk about one specific artist each issue of the magazine. I think by choosing a new artist each month keeps the magazine fresh and interesting for readers. The price of this magazine would be £4.50 and would be released monthly. There will be 12 copies released as it will only run for a year. The target audience for this magazine will be 14-22 years old. I have chosen this as I feel a lot of young people enjoy pop music and would want to read about it in their spare time. The tertiary target audience for this magazine is 30-40 years old. I have chosen this age group because pop music is a very popular genre and many people listen to it so I think having an older age group as the tertiary target audience is appropriate. The contents of the double page spread will be information on the artist that has been chosen for the month and a q and a with the chosen artist.
I would call the magazine POP Monthly. I have chosen this name because it clearly shows that the magazine is about pop and is also a monthly magazine. The main colour of the magazine will be white and blue. I have chosen these colours as they are very neutral colours.
Strengths and weaknesses
A strength of doing a magazine on pop music in Hertfordshire is that pop music is very popular meaning that this magazine could get a lot of sales due to the popularity of the genre. Another strength of this magazine is that there is lots of famous music artits from Hertfordshire so a lot of their fans would want to buy and read the magazine. By having music artist in each copy of the magazine it could attract lots of people to buy copies as they want to find out about the artist and or buy the copy of their favourite artist.
A weakness of doing a magazine on pop music in Hertfordshire is that there is not loads of artist to write about, hence why only 12 copies are being made. This may be bad for sales as people may only want to commit to buying a series of magazines which last longer than a year. Another weakness is that there is a lot of information about pop and music artist online so people may just look up information on their mobile phones.
Idea 3
My third idea is music artists from Hertfordshire. This idea could attract lots of people many people to want to buy this magazine because people can purchase there favourite local singers magazine.
I would call this magazine HA Magazine ( Hertfordshire Artists Magazine). I have chosen this name as I think it fits the content of what will be in the magazine well. The main colours of the magazine will be black and red. I have chosen these colours to draw the buyer to see the bold colours to catch their attention.
Strengths and weaknesses
The strength of this magazine is that it could get lots of popularity from the individual fans of each musician. This is a big positive because if they buy their favourite musicians copy and like it they will come back and buy the copies of the next musicians. Another strength of this magazine is that the reader will find lots of information on the musician that magazine is on about. If someone is trying to find out information for this artist, for example for a project, this magazine would be great as it will have lots of information on the chosen artist.
A weakness of this magazine Is that there is only a limited amount of musicians from Hertfordshire meaning only limited magazines would be made, because of the lack of musicians from the area. Another weakness is that it will be quite hard to write one magazine on just one artist. There may nor be enough information or content to fill a whole magazine with. This means the magazine may be quite small. Another weakness is that the artist the magazine is on for the month may not be very popular so they may not sell many copies of that one magazine, so it wouldn't be worth making the magazine.
Conclusion
I have chosen too use my second idea about pop music in Hertfordshire. I think this is the best idea as pop is the most popular genre of music, so by doing the magazine on pop I think it will be the most popular and sell the most. Also this idea includes an interview of a musician in every copy so it almost binds two of my ideas together. Pop is also a very positive based music, there is no stigma around pop music like some other genres of music so that is why I think pop music is the best to do a magazine on.
I think doing a magazine on music festivals didn't give me enough options as it may not have a good amount of content each month due to lack of knowledge of what festivals were coming up and if any where coming up. I also felt the same about doing a magazine on just music artists as there just wouldn't be enough content to write a whole magazine about.
